Our argument about {political leader} was awful. I wish it had never happened. I'm so sorry for losing my temper. I never should have said {insult}.
I have always respected and listened to your opinions, despite our different political and societal views. That's why it's so hard for me to reconcile your perspective on {political leader}. {Political leader}'s values seem so fundamentally counter to your own.
With that being said, I know that no issues are completely binary, and I can accept your point that {political leader} has some redeeming qualities, such as {qualities}. Even so, I have to stand by my position that {political leader} is not good for this {city/state/nation} due to {shortcomings}.
The upshot is, I regret that we argued and in order to preserve our friendship, I think the best approach moving forward is that we don't talk politics at all.
