I am so {expletive} sorry that I forgot our anniversary. I really have no excuse, other than my usual boneheaded propensity for forgetting important dates. And the day I married you is the most important one in my life, second only to {meeting you/when child was born/etc.}.
Also, I should have intuited right away that I had messed up. If I’d been paying better attention, I’d have noticed that something was “off” between us. Disappointing you and making you think you aren’t important to me are the last things I want to do, ever.
Perhaps it’s too little, too late, but I did plan {experience or gift}. I hope you will forgive me for this foolish oversight.
