Writing a Letter of Apology

    

Living in a society or community pretty much requires you to bow your head and utter the words, “I’m sorry” from time to time. It can be a humbling experience, but that’s a small price to pay when you want to continue to develop and maintain meaningful relationships. Besides, you can’t always be right all the time.

But what if you run into a situation that needs a little more than a verbal apology? (No, texting is not a viable option.)

Knowing how to write a solid letter of apology can often mean the difference between employment and unemployment, a girlfriend and ex-girlfriend, or respect and shameless conspiracies behind your back.

If you need a little help getting your thoughts on paper, follow the points below to get started!

• Apologize!
  A letter of apology without an apology is really just an excuse. Make sure you say those crucial words at the beginning of your letter.
• Acknowledge what happened
  Be specific about what happened and be clear about what you’re sorry for.
• Solution/What you learned
  This will show that you are being sincere. It will also provide reassurance to the offended party that you won’t do it again. (You won’t, will you?)
• Conclusion
  End the letter on a positive note and express your openness to discuss what happened.

Besides the points above, make sure you are using a respectful tone and you come off sincere. It doesn’t hurt to have a proofreader either!
