Today, on your birthday, I feel like I should only have words of happiness and pride. And don't get me wrong, I do have those feelings, in spades. Unfortunately, mixed in with my joy that you've become such an amazing adult is the regret that I missed so much of your beautiful life.
I'm so sorry that I haven't been around as much as I should have been. You deserved to grow up with a {mother/father} who prioritized you more than I was able. It's strange, because when I look at you I have such mixed feelings of regret and happiness, because despite my lack of parenting skills, you still became the strong, incredible person you are today.
I hope that moving forward we can find a new way to be in each other's lives. I understand if it's too late, but I want to try if you'll let me. If not, please know how sorry I am.
